Computer science is all about problem solving as it deals with the design of hardware and software used to provide solutions in the scientific, business and social sectors. Combining theory and practical skills, this discipline will offer you many career choices in highly specialized fields such as leadership and programming.

Studying computer science

You can choose one of the following two paths to continue your studies in computer science right after passing your Class XII board exams:

  1. Computer Engineering : You can take 4-year BTech courses in IT. Admission to these courses is through JEE Mains, JEE Advanced or JEE organized by the states. After completing your BTech course, you can take the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for admission to 2-year MTech courses in IT, followed by centralized counseling.
  2. Computer Science (Honors): You can take 3-year Bachelor of Computer Science courses. These courses are divided into six semesters. After graduation, you can opt for a 2-year master’s degree in computer science.

Engineering entrance exams:

JEE sector

JEE Mains is carried out by the National Testing Agency (NTA). By deactivating it, you can be admitted to NIT, CFTI and other engineering institutes.

  • Eligibility: You must pass the class XII board exams or equivalent exam with physics, chemistry and mathematics as compulsory subjects. At least 75% aggregates are required for admission to IIT, NIT and GFTI through JEE Mains.

JEE Advanced

This is the entrance exam that you must pass to enter the IIT and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

  • Eligibility: You must be one of the 250,000 candidates selected (all categories combined) in the BE / BTech paper from JEE Mains. You can only take the JEE Advanced twice in two consecutive years.

West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE)
You must pass the WBJEE conducted by the Joint Entrance Examination Board of West Bengal to be admitted to private and state government engineering institutions.

  • Eligibility: You must pass your Class XII exams with physics, chemistry and mathematics as compulsory subjects. Or you have to pass your 10 + 3 diploma exams with mathematics as a compulsory subject. You must also obtain at least 50% in each of the compulsory subjects and keep at least 50% aggregate.

  • Eligibility: You can apply for GATE if you have already completed a government approved degree program in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Business / Arts and are currently studying in third year or above in any undergraduate program.
