SINGAPORE, May 05, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — TIYA, a social networking application for online communities backed by NASDAQ-listed company LIZHI INC. (NASDAQ: LIZI), officially announced a new collaboration with Tom Bancroft Studios‘world of a month WedMay Artistic challenge.
MerMay, an annual drawing event with millions of artists and viewers joining in the fun, was created by former Disney host Tom Bancroft and has found worldwide popularity and success since the beginning of 2016. The Art Challenge encourages artists and art lovers to draw a new mermaid-inspired sketch every day during the month of May, using MerMay’s official sketch prompts.
In keeping with the event’s spirit of exploration and imagination, TIYA aims to reinvent social media norms and reimagine the way communities and interest groups interact. In partnership with ANiLEAGUE (an ACG artist alliance) as one of MerMay’s sponsors, TIYA participates in various MerMay promotions and campaigns, including sponsoring MerMay’s official May 10 guest and hashtag: #Vibe .
Since its debut in the United States in 2020, TIYA has become an extremely popular real-time interactive chat application among young American users, having been downloaded nearly 20 million times worldwide. In addition to working with Tom Bancroft Studios and ANiLEAGUE for MerMay, TIYA also uses her own drawing prompts and releases her own set of 31 artworks for each May Day, featuring male and female mermaids in various themes and depicting different cultures.

MerMay was created by accident when Tom Bancroft drew two teenage mermaids chatting with their “cell phones” in hand while lounging on rocks in the ocean. The skit went viral on Facebook, which gave Bancroft the idea to work on a month of mermaid-themed skits and call it “MerMay”, as the skit took off before May. Bancroft took to his social media to join in and the drawing prompt immediately gained popularity across the web. Since then, MerMay takes place every year during the month of May. Now in its sixth year, the illustrations and animations created for the official WedMay 2022 Art Competition will be judged by a panel of highly respected artists, including Tom Bancroft himself.
