Interview with Tim Groot, CEO and Founder of Networking App: Grip

Grip was founded in 2016 as a networking app for professionals to use at trade shows. Since then, we’ve become the premier engagement platform in the market for event planners to create virtual, hybrid, and live event experiences through a single solution.

Today, we work with 12 of the world’s 20 leading event planners, to connect professionals to create great connections using our leading AI software.

How did you come up with the idea for the business?

I have been in events for a long time. I started dating them as a teenager with my father who grew tulips in the Netherlands. When I moved to London to work in full time events, I realized how valuable industry events are, in that they provide the urgency to facilitate good business relationships. and the best return of time for the organizers and the participants.

Grip was born out of a need to make the networking of these type of events as efficient as possible – both in terms of not wasting time and effort trying to organize meetings that might never come to fruition, and making sure both parties are interested in the other even before the meeting takes place.

How has the business evolved during the pandemic?

Before the pandemic, Grip mainly dealt with live events. However, when the pandemic hit almost a year ago, there was an immediate demand for a service that would allow these events to be virtually hosted, avoiding having to cancel key events and conferences that are integrated. to the marketing strategies of many brands. We pivoted our business model to become the first complete virtual event solution, ensuring that key customers could transition to a digital event format.

As a result, we have grown in size during this period. Our 13 employees in 2019 grew to 58 by the end of 2020 and we have grown in territories like the United States and Dubai. We also recently announced a $ 13 million round of funding that will help us continue to expand our services.

What can we expect to see from Grip in the future?

We will continue to focus on developing our platform offerings, with a focus on tools for hybrid formats. We expect event planners to turn to a more hybrid model as lockdown measures begin to ease, generating and hosting in-person and virtual events year-round. We believe that companies cannot adequately provide an ‘all-in-one’ solution for organizing and managing industry events, and instead our strategy is to remain agile so that we can adapt to changes. changing needs of event planners.

In addition to investing in talent within Grip, we have also hired within our leadership team to ensure we have the structure in place to deliver product commitments to our customers and to reinvest in our business. Such developments and additional expertise will help to sustain the platform for in-person event feedback, combined with virtual offerings.
