IIT Madras Launches Free Online Artificial Intelligence Courses

UG and PG students pursuing computer science or any other degree can apply for this course

The course will run from January 24 to March 8, 2022

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Madras has launched a new eight-week online course on artificial intelligence. The course will be offered through the National Technology-Enhanced Learning Program (NPTEL) platform.

The course titled Artificial Intelligence: Constraint Satisfaction Problems, aims to examine general approaches to solving finite domain constraint satisfaction problems and explore how research can be combined with constraint propagation to find solutions. The course is free to register and learn. But if participants want a certificate, they will need to register and take the proctored exam that we conduct in person at one of the designated exam centers. The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000. Only the electronic certificate will be made available. Participants will not receive any hard copy.

The course will be led by Deepak Khemani, professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Madras.

Course layout:

  • Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSP), examples.
  • Constraint networks, equivalent and projection networks.
  • Constraints propagation, arc coherence, path coherence, i-coherence.
  • Directional consistency and graphic order, search without backtracking, adaptive consistency.
  • Research methods for solving CSPs, anticipation methods, order of dynamic variables and values.
  • Backtracking methods, Gaschnig backward jump, graph-based backward jump, conflict directed backward jump, and combination of looking forward with backtracking, learning.
  • Model-based systems, model-based diagnostics, truth maintenance systems, planning as CSP. Wrap.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students pursuing studies in computer science or any other degree can apply for this course. Professionals and other interested participants with prior basic computer skills can also register for this course. It is preferable that participants have taken two other free online courses offered by IIT Madras, namely AI: Search Methods for Problem Solving and AI: Knowledge Representation and Reasoning.

The course will run from January 24 to March 8, 2022. Participants will only receive a certificate if they achieve an average assignment grade of 10 out of 25 and an average exam grade of 30 out of 75.

The exams will take place on March 27, 2022. The morning session will take place from 9 am to 12 noon and the afternoon session from 2 pm to 5 pm.
