Free virtual French lessons offered to immigrant parents in PEI. with permanent residence

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI – Free online French courses are offered to immigrant parents in PEI. having permanent residency through a partnership with a college in New Brunswick.

Announced in a Jan. 11 press release, the Coopérative d’études francophone de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard (CIF) said the two new programs, French for Parents and Cours de Langue pour les Immigrants au Canada, will help immigrants to learn basic French.

Depending on the skills, the program may allow learners to obtain proof of language proficiency for the application for Canadian citizenship (CLB 4 or CLB 4).

The other new program, French for Parents, was designed to help immigrant parents whose children attend a French school or immersion program.

The course will help parents acquire basic French skills so that they can better help their children with their schoolwork in the Francophone system or immersion learning.

The program, organized in partnership with the Language Learning Center of the New Brunswick Community College (CCNB), will also help parents network and better communicate with the community of members of their child’s school.

Satvinder Sangha, a parent who took the French for Parents program, said her teacher Nathalie Carrier made learning French a fun experience.

“As a newcomer the first thing I felt was welcome and I had the confidence to speak and express myself. Nathalie made sure that the course was light and informative and she used the online tools very effectively, ”Sangha said.

French for Parents will take place from January 24 to March 23 and classes will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Language Course for Immigrants to Canada will run until June, and admission is continuous throughout the year. Classes take place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Both courses can be taken simultaneously.
